RS> Welp, they certainly got around to eventually fixing the double RS> send to Rockwells problem. PE> Probably due to the fact that it is a Rockwell-based modem now? Good point come to think of it |-) RS> Pity the arseholes didnt give a shit about retrofitting RS> it to the stuff in the field too |-) PE> I don't think they actually did anything at all to fix it. PE> They're not that smart. Dunno, never did get around to finding out what their SoftModem did about that. RS> I was amazed to see you even contemplate another Spirit. PE> Let's see. I've got a choice of spending $700 for a modem PE> that doesn't connect to Rockwell callers, and e.g. made PE> Paul Markham have to set his modem down to 26000 or something. Thats working it out logically tho, what I was essentially saying is the the vast bulk of people when screwed so outrageously by the hardware supplier on one modem just wont even consider that stuff on a new modem purchase, they just wont give them another chance. PE> Or I could have a Banksia Myfastmodem V34 which now would cost PE> me $535 instead of $400, but I didn't know that at the time. PE> Or I could have a Spirit Viper which would cost me $492, but I PE> didn't know that at a time, when someone was offering to loan me one. True, but you have to factor in a hard to value factor for the potential to get shafted all over again. In theory less chance this time around with the Rockwell use but they were always very willing to shaft people on upgrades, quite apart from not giving a damn about fixing bugs that got out into the field. The pricks fucked up with the original Spirit, didnt put enough computing horsepower in it, made all sorts of wild claims that since the modem was purely software with a gp DSP, the hardware was fine right thru to V34 inclusive. Turned out the fucked abortion didnt even have the horsepower for V32.terbo. So they just shafted the customers for hardware upgrades to get that small step, then went on to shaft them again by jumping ship to the Rockwell chipset for V34. After a record like that, I wouldnt touch a Spirit if it was the last modem on earth, except maybe I would take on ahead of an Interlink |-) RS> I have heard about people like you, no matter how badly you RS> treat them, they will still keep buying your shit product. RS> Never actually met one before tho |-) PE> If it had worked PERFECTLY the first time, then it would have PE> been acceptable. Possibly. The trouble is tho with their record, if it had worked fine with all your current callers, says nothing much useful about what might have happened in the future after say you see a big volume of some particular V34 modem show up some fucked abortion in the Viper. Presumably Digicom wouldnt give a damn. I guess they might condescend to pass on any code mods that Rockwell did, but that would be about all you could hope for. Fuckem I say. PE> However, I know that it does not, and I know that they won't PE> be fixing any problems with it, so I won't be getting one. Sounds like a good idea to me. Who were the ones calling who appeared to not be able to get any decent connect at all ? What modems ? --- PQWK202* Origin: afswlw rjfilepwq (3:711/934.2) SEEN-BY: 711/934 @PATH: 711/934 |
