Not really. By the time they negotiate on the line speed stuff,
test the line etc, then negotiate the protocol stuff in the V42
etc, it takes about that time. USR to USR can be rather quicker
but thats making some assumptions because its USR to USR.

Thats an antique myth now. That 'first tone put out' stuff was
what was done in the old FSK days, but they are very very long
gone now. That initial speed stuff is done quite differently now.

In theory there is some stuff that can be done, but it will inevitably
fang your arse in the circumstances like when you did the Viper test.
What the fuck is the point when say with my calls they are typically
over 3:30 minutes, who cares about say the 4 secs you might save if
you are fucking lucky ?
