I think the creosote problem is worsened by burning wood with more than
about 10% to 15% humidity content. A flue temperature much below 450F
combined with humidity is the worst because it causes condensation which
attracts even more deposits.
One often hears about people who having replaced their oil furnace by
natural gas, suddenly finding their chimney totally rusted out. The
reason for this is that gas burns at a lower temperature and water is
one byproduct of combustion. No wonder their ex-oil chimneys rust out
prematurely.
On another note, I have a question about a type of solar heat collector
sometimes seen which consists of a sun facing wall painted flat black
over which a transparent layer is mounted creating an air space. The
heated air then circulates by either convection or mechanical means and
warms the house. What use can this type of solar collector be put to in
the summer time once heating is no longer needed?
