G'day Tim, 
 The fact that the protocols worked at first and then did not later 
suggests to me a memory problem or a line noise problem (as with 
call waiting, that we have here). Telemate is not crippleware. 
BTW the latest DOS version is V4.21. It would be worth while to 
try another phone line and even try another comms program if you 
have to,  but you're right .. Telemate IMO is the best of them.
