The purpose is as follows:
1) Build lean muscles mass - muscle mass uses up more calories even
at rest than does blubber. Helps aid loss of excess body fat.
2) Burn glycogen stored in muscles during anaerobic weight lifting.
Body must replenish the glucose afterward, some fat will be
mobilized during this phase - helps loss of excess body fat.
3) Gives you something to fill all that loose skin that you'll have
following loss of excess body fat. Unless, perhaps you enjoy
looking like a bag of bones in loose fitting turkey skin.
4) Strong muscle helps support and protect joints, spine, etc.,
helps prevent injury.
5) Performance enhancement for many physical activities.
6) Weight bearing exercise increases bone density for stronger bones,
which also helps prevent injury.
In addition to a little weight lifting, you may want to take up indoor
swimming during the winter season.
