Less to do with idleness, more to do with power. With enough pumps any good
American pneumatic is capable of 15 -20 ft pound energy and thus would be
considered the same as a firearm. Toss in recoilless and lightweight and you
have the dread Von Herder airgun in the flesh, "An admirable and unique

PS- I believe you are correct about internally generated temperatures being
the most likely variable for velocity changes due to pumped slow vs pumped
fast. There are even more variables in the equation though. Just like the
spring guns pump pneumatic airguns are not simple creatures.
