I cant answer for Pis, but my desktop/laptops here get totally rebuilt
when I upograde.
/home is elsehere on a server so that's OK anyway.
By NOT reinstalling everything I only need to reinstall what todays
rather than yesterdays needs are, as and when I need to.
I keep backuos of config files on the server as well.
