Environmentalists are suggesting Big Oil did it -

Now why would oil companies do a damfool thing like blowing up
an oil rig?  Well, pending legislation concerning climate change
could wind up being trashed if offshore drilling remains in the
bill.  You see, certain congresscritters have threatened to pull
their support, as the bill is designed to curb emissions of
pollution-causing gases (caused by offshore drilling) blamed
for global warming.  See how that works?  Blow up an oil rig,
get pending legislation trashed, oil industry continues to
drill for oil as if nothing has happened.

President Obama remains committed to expanding offshore drilling
to new areas of the Outer Continental Shelf, and the Gulf of Mexico.
All he has done is put those plans on hold.  For now.  Until things
die down a bit.  And then it will be business as usual.
