subject: WTF is going on?

BG> Nah, my USR works 100% from here, but at Jack's I was using his old
BG> V.32 Lightcomm96, which is a fairly generic Rockwell-based modem.

DM> It happens anytime, but since I call around 2300-2400,
DM> it seems to happen most noticeably then.

BG> Still sounds like a Spirit problem to me.

RS> Sort of. But it can be atleast worked around, it used to happen
RS> to me at one time, but a rom change at my end fixed it forever.

BG> Now my Sportie has started doing it too!

Yeah, noticed you said that after you had returned to Bris.
Must be bad karma, payment for those sins you committed while away |-)

BG> Only seems to happen at certain times though, like between 0600-0800.
BG> Other times are fine.

I also didnt comment the first time around so I could see if it was
going to show up for me too. It didnt, no change on my calls. I call
almost always at 0730 too.

BG> What's your workaround?

None at all now. It was a rom change in my modem which eliminated
it forever. It was a total pain in the arse before that tho, very
similar to what you are seeing.

BG> I've tried forcing both LAPM and MNP, but the result is the same...
BG> they sit there howling at each other until I drop DTR.

Yeah, thats what I was seeing.

What I do see very very rarely is the two modems negotiate the speed
stuff find so I see the CD come up on the front of the modem, then no
activity at all between the mailers and FD hasnt see a connection yet.
I've never bothered to let that sit there long enough to see what would
happen, presumably FD would eventually get sick of waiting and retry.
I just ESC out of it. Very rare tho, maybe once a month at most.

In your case I wouldnt be surprised if its line conditions which is
catching the Spirit out. A particular set of conditions is what causes
the failure to successfully negotiate the speed stuff and you are just
seeing more of that than you used to. The V32 modem you used at Pearl
is more affected than the Sportshoe.

BG> Fucking Spirits!

RS> They will haunt you now.

BG> The bastards have been haunting me for ages already.

Quite right too. I told you all those cats you murdered would get you
eventually. You wouldnt listen. You can suffer now |-)
