There are a lot of things I don't know about BeOS and this is one of them. ;-)

I actually downloaded BeOS because I thought writing GUI programs for it
would be a good way to learn C++. This was when BeOS 5 Personal Edition
had just come out (July 2000). I was impressed by it, but some aspects left
me disappointed, particularly the unfriendliness of the GUI (coming from an
Windows and OS/2 background) and its lack of multiuser support, so I
thought I'd give it a bit of time to mature, but unfortunately Be Inc fell
over. I'm a bit surprised it was never turned into an open source project.

My BeOS installation sits on a P133 that I normally use for backups,
testing software in Windows 98 and XP (yes, I installed Windows XP on a
P133 - with 64 Mb RAM!), and using as a television (TV tuner card). I'm
lucky if I boot BeOS once a month. :-)

Incidentally I ended up learning C++ by way of learning OOP programming
using Borland Delphi and later adapting the concepts for use with C++
Builder. I'm only now starting to learn some of the advanced concepts of
C++ though.

I consider this to be a poor design decision on Be's part (or whoever wrote the GUI).
