It's been discussed before.
The premise is that MOST power companies are using coal or oil for power 
generation.
Current levels of power loss over transmission lines ranges from 30-70%
In order to store 1000 watts of energy in the batteries, you need to charge 
with 1600 watts. (another loss!)
The bottom line here is that you will be lucky if you hit 10% energy 
efficiency in most areas. (fossil fuel consumed vs. energy produced.
Gasolene engines are closer to 30% and diesels are closer to 40%.
Ergo, electrics are very dirty considering the energy source.
If your energy source is a nuke power plant then the electric makes sense as 
there will be no hydrcarbon/co2 production in the energy.
The BEST solution is fusion as one of its byproducts is hydrogen, which can 
be burned in fuel cells. The lowe efficiency (lower than IC engines), is more 
than offset by burning a 'waste' product of fusion and the combustion of the 
hydrogen is totally clean. The by product is water.
