BA> Replying to a message of Bob Klahn to John Massey:
J>>>> Why should it be the place of the govt to force new technology on
J>>>> us?
J>>>> THAT I think is a major, heavy-duty question.
J>>>> Are we to remain technologically behind because change is
J>>>> costly? Should not government aid progress?
JM>>> Government does not aid progress.
BK>> Guess radar was not progress. Guess penicillin was not progress.
BK>> Guess Heart transplant surgery was not progress. Guess manned flight
BK>> was not progress. Guess paramedics were not progress. Guess
BK>> helicopters were not progress.
BA> All of those examples - save probably paramedics - came
BA> about without government help. The discovery of
BA> penicillin, BTW, was a happy accident. That government
BA> barged in after the fact I will not dispute.
None of them "came about" without govt help. Penicillin was
discovered by accident, but it became widely available because
of military need in war.
BK>> Guess universal education was not progress.
BA> It's surprising how many people in this country have
BA> managed and are continuing to manage to get educated
BA> without the 'help' of government run schools.
About 10%, as it's been for a very long time. And 90% need govt
schools. Remember, universal public education was originally a
govt idea. In England it started as a way for the people to be
able to read the bible for themselves. Today it's a necessity
to function in our society.
Private schools get a lot of govt support, and they want even
more.
Those things above that were not invented under govt auspices
were greatly advanced by govt investment. Oh, and if you ever
get a heart bypass, thank the VA for at least some of the
research and development.
