No problem there... A helmet can (in many cases), by absorbing some of the
energy of impact, reduce this acceleration to an acceptable level. This,
BTW, is why helmets are more effective with bicycles than motor vehicles,
where the energies involved are considerably higher.

Sounds to me like you need a different helmet. Have somebody who knows what
they're doing fit you for it. As you say, a poorly fitting helmet is often
no better than no helmet at all, if only because it doesn't get worn.
