JD>So, now that it's been declared more or less on topic, what IS Windows
Windows CE is yet another variation on the Windows 32 programming interface
(API), in this case, optimized for use on small computers often with severe
memory constraints, and lacking standard drives.
CE works with several CPUs, from a variety of manufacturers.
CE 1.0/1.1 was only available on a series of Handheld PCs (HPCs) from
various manufacturers: Casio, Compaq, NEC, Phillips, Hitachi, etc. These
typically offered 2-8 megs RAM, a small keyboard, a stylus pointing device,
and 480x240 or 640 x 240 grey-scale video. The operating system and a
series of Microsoft applications are stored in ROM, while additional
applications and data are stored in RAM.
CE 2.0 adds colour support, pocket Internet Explorer in ROM, some interface
improvements. CE 2.0 devices include HPCs similar to the CE 1.0 devices,
and a series of keyboard-less Palm PC devices similar to the Palm Pilot. A
CE device for use in automobiles (built-into the dashboard) has been
demoed.
There has been some discussion of Microsoft making CE the basis for a
network-computer device.
