Since I don't know much about IM at all, and don't have any IM clients
installed here, I can only guess that it's because they either started as,
or still are, AOL users, and AIM was right there in front of them so they
got comfortable with it and learned how to use it?
I think IM clients and browsers are a lot alike in that there isn't (or
wasn't) that much to differentiate between different brands, so people use
what's most easily available.

That's odd, I haven't seen a Netscape icon on my desktop since I ran OS/2.
As I recall, none of NT 3.51, NT4, or W2K installs Netscape. Where does
your Netscape come from?
