Hello Robby, You know i had a similar problem with my crabs climbing
up the intake pipe of my filter and getting stuck in the filter. 
What i did was run out to walmart and buy some of that plastic 
canvas. You know the kind they use for crafts and such. Real simple 
to use and very cheap. Just cut the shape you want including niches 
for the pipes and hoses, now stick it on covering the openings. No 
muss no fuss :)
