Well, I copied the other 10 partitions over, and I couldn't get my working
XP (on drive K:) to boot. After fighting the recovery console (why can't
they let you edit boot.ini and why can't you copy to a root directory), I
got a valid boot.ini file set up, but now XP says a problem is not allowing
it to validate my authorization. I fought this until midnight last night,
and I'm now back on the original 2 drives. I'm going to come up with a new
plan before I try it again.
Is it possible to set the boot drive letter before booting? My working XP
in on K:, but that means I have to have partitions C:-J: before it to get
the right letter assigned. I'd like to copy that partition over first and
boot from it, then copy the rest later, but if I do that, it won't be drive
K:.
Maybe it's time to build the system fresh, new OS, better partitioning,
reinstall apps. That's a LOT of work, I have a lot of software.
Maybe I'll try Ghost before giving up. Time to visit the Norton site, I guess.
I just knew it wouldn't be that easy. Windows never is.
