You forget, Cajuns have been living in exile for centuries,
and banned by the Queen of England from ever returning to their
beloved Acadia.  :)

The film is a beautiful anti-war statement, making the point
that human beings should always be respectfully (and sometimes
non-respectfully) suspicious of their motivations.

For those not familiar with the film, Morant's "Rule 303" is a
reference to the Lee Enfield .303 rifle issued at the time the story
took place (early 20th Century in South Africa).  Morant's meaning
was he shot the prisoners because he had the means to do so (rifles
in hand) and that was all the authority he needed.
