SH> Hi everyone... does anyone on here have a red lory as a pet
SH> (not a breeder)? I am interested in getting one someday, and
SH> would like to know the pros and cons. Thanks!
A friend used to have one years ago. It was a wild-caught, but it tamed
down fairly well. It talked, but ONLY when nobody was in the room. It
sounded like the Wicked Witch's voice. It was playful like a
puppy--rolling over and over with found objects in its feet. Yet its
beak was designed to cut thick fruit skins, so when it bit anybody, that
person KNEW it (and bled profusely). The major drawback to lory-keeping
is that they need a special diet which can cause them to have extremely
liquid droppings which can shoot up to 6 FEET. And if the cage is not
WASHED DOWN daily, the whole house begins to smell like fermented fruit
juices because the lory poop sours quickly.
They're very neat birds, and I'm sure a handfed would be a much better
companion than my friend's wild one was, but IMHO, you pretty much need
a waterproof, hose-able room in order to keep one indoors.
Perhaps somebody who HAS a lory as an indoor pet can comment on how they
keep the mess under control???
