  I don't know what edition they published down under, but in my copy he
  says no such thing.  He in fact specifically states that ptrdiff_t is
  a signed integral type whereas size_t is an unsigned integral type.

  Page 219.

  Incidentally, several 16:16 C implementations get ptrdiff_t and size_t
  wrong.  They allow size_t to have 32 bits, yet define ptrdiff_t to be
  16 bits.  To understand why this is wrong, meditate upon the following
  mantra :

        size_t i = 65536 ;
        char * p = new char [i] ;
        ptrdiff_t d = (p + i) - p ;
