DM> No offense intended. I was just trying to comment on the fact that
DM> in the 60's most adults viewed the Beatles as ugly and filthy whereas
DM> any young girl today who falls in love with Paul's big doe eyes on an
DM> old album cover probably has the tacit approval of mum and daddy.
I understand what you're are saying now. Still, some teens don't really
want anything to do with their parents but still listen to the Beatles. Maybe
sometimes the parents don't pay attention to the music their kids listen to,
I can't picture me and my parents listening to a record together. But I'll
listen to it by myself. It's just some wierd way of wanting to be independant
but it's hard to explain.
But sometimes if I here a song on a station that my parents listen to, and
I like it, it's sorta helpful when your parents know that band and can tell
you about it. That's how I started listening to Fleetwood Mac anyway :)..
DM> The rebellion versus conformity thing is a little complicated. A lot
DM> of "rebels" don't seem to realize they're wearing a uniform. And it
DM> can take more courage to rebel against your peer group than some
DM> "authority figure". Spoken like a forty year old? Having spent at
DM> least 25 years exploring music outside the top 40, I've got some
DM> pride in appreciating obscure music, but I also reached the point of
I listen to what other people would consider obscure music also (Aphex
Twin, Sonic Youth), I never really realized until now that I was rebelling
against my peers. I don't know anyone who listens to most stuff I listen to.
I always thought I was just being kinda stubborn, but now it makes more sense
that I could be rebelling against my friends or just trying to be kinda
different.
DM> own in my college days. Hey, some people collect 8 tracks.
And I only wish I could get enough money to buy I record player so I could
collect stuff that is only released on vinyl :).
DM> For the purpose of this discussion, yes, and I agree. All I'm really
DM> saying is that I'm slightly nauseated by the smug approval bestowed
DM> by certain oldsters onthe tweenies who "luv the music of the sixties"
DM> because they appreciate _Sgt. Pepper_ at the same level that their
DM> peers luv NKOTB, Nelson, Hanson or whatever is currently top 40.
I'm not really sure why you're "nauseated" by people like that. Are you
saying you don't like how everyone thinks of music of the sixties as the
*just* the Beatles? Or do you not like how people say they're such a big fan,
when really you were apart of that generation and maybe they're sort of
ruining that for you or something? Well I don't know...c'ya.
