I won't enter into a political argument about it, but I disagree.

Having a minimum protocol requirement is a good idea. And if one should be
there, it might as well be one that supports *some* distributed network
environments, "intelligent" sender/receiver negotiation, etc.

Oh well, we all have our opinions :-)
