I think I know how to write to the root in recovery console.  There's an
environment variable that you set to allow access to otherwise forbidden
places.  Not too intuitive, and it still needs an editor, not that silly
bootcfg command.

I'm going to get Drive Image to do the copies next time, rather than
Partition Magic.  PM does a lot of things well, but partition copying en
masse isn't one of them.
