Greg was hit by a Randy Johnson fastball for uttering:
GC> Ah found it here. In 1981, TSN found out that in
GC> 1910, Cobb was reported to have a .385 average and
GC> Lajoie .384, making Cobb the batting champ.
The problem is that MLB doesn't want the TRUTH. TSN carries the disputed data
because they don't want to get on MLB's bad side. They'll correct typos for
their books but they won't correct MLB's archaic records. I've found them to
nice guys about the whole deal. I've seen two very bad mistakes and called
them on both and they went to work to correct the first (Many of the ABA's
W-L records were incorrect) and said that they'd look into the second (This
one's been in there since 1993-1994. I was doing some research on the Atlanta
Hawks when I noticed that their stats that year for several players were
incorrect. I didn't feel like going through the whole 93-94 season to find
any more mistakes so I decided to contact Elias first to let them know and
the guy that answered was a real butthead. The arrogant SOB wouldn't
acknowledge that the data was wrong and more importantly, he thought I was
out to lunch even though I had data from two other sources that confirmed
that the data was wrong. One of them got its stats from Elias and he insisted
that they hadn't -- never mind the fact that it clearly states that they
provided the stats for the book in the acknowledgments. I then contact TSN
and they said they'd look into it and gave me the number for the guy at the
NBA office that would be very interested in hearing about my problems with
Elias).
GC> The rules committee opted to let the record book
GC> stand as it was, being consistent with the rules
 GC> of the time.
I think that they shouldn't have altered any of the statistics UNLESS they
were incorrect. Imagine how much it would affect statistics today if you
turned around and applied the OLD rules on today's stats. I say that they
should let the stats stand as they applied to that time UNLESS they found a
case like Cobb's batting title, which is an obvious error and not a change of
rules. The ONLY thing that I'd love to see added to the old stats is to have
them go back and figure out run support for pitchers.
