An alternative method for using the external edtor would be to remove the 
references to it in MAX.CTL etc, and run it in the same way as a door with 
XTERN_RUN etc from either a MEX/MEC file or MENUS.CTL.
I was working on running TimEd through DOORWAY like that, although the 
security holes were a little to big for me to ever make it availble to the 
users.
I had that working by calling a MEC file, which re-wrote the TIMED.CFG file 
with the appropriate user details, then running TIMED through the doorway 
(using v1.10, and remapping the keys to shell etc to other functions so a 
shell wasn't ever possible :-)
