I have always fed mine very small chunks of canned tuna...well flushed
with fresh water...if you do this, be sure to buy the type that is
packed in water, not oil.  They will eat almost anything that is
small enough and close to the bottom.  They love live worms also.
Some of mine became so tame that they would come right up to my
hand, and take the food from my fingers

Be very careful to seal the top of your tank as well as possible...
if there is any small escape route, they will find it.
