I think it's a pipe-dream. Back in the days before true civilization,
hunter/gatherer times (Neanderthalensis) things probably worked a bit like
that but only because they defined 'profit' as a different kind of wealth.
Good furs, tools, etc was 'wealth'. Later man defined it as how many horses
or goats one had. How many cultivatable fields. It was still 'money' but
not made of metal. Even primitive societies today have a form of 'wealth'
that they trade back and forth for needed things. Tis the nature of the
beast.
