Great news Bob, still trying to figure out the telnet thing - even with 
an explanation from Doc. At least I can collect from the www address 
anyway ;-)

I'm trying some of my old Win3.11 software to see what works best with 
this method of collecting Fido. So far I can't get Golded to work (but 
that might be down to having forgotten how to set it up!), or BlueWave - 
I can get it to run, but I have lost my registration details and it 
don't work quite right after the evaluation period. I still have 
Termail, which runs under XP, but I can't get it to read mail , so 
for now it's CMPQwk which work very nicely - plain text with incoming 
mail highlighted to show the to & fro threads in different colours. I 
could even switch on taglines, if I was feeling that sad!
