Subject: Loneliness
Bob,
Thanks for the article on loneliness. As a therapist, I often find people
are emotionally imobilized by their feelings of isolation. Determining first
that the person is not clinically depressed, it is amazing the progress
people will make when they reach outside of themselves and try to help
others. Often we, as client and therapist, will try these moves in miniscule
increments and subsequently the results will create its own momentum. It's
frightening and risky but it sure seems to work.
This poem came in the new Polio Epic. It seems appropriate.
RISK
To laugh is to risk appearing the fool.
Laugh anyway.
To weep is to risk appearing sentimental.
Weep anyway.
To reach out for another is to risk involvement.
Get involved anyway.
To expose feelings is to risk exposing your true self.
Be vulnerable anyway.
To place your ideas and dreams before the crowd is to risk their loss.
Present your ideas anyway.
To love is to risk not being loved in return.
Love anyway.
To hope is to risk despair.
Hope anyway.
To try is to risk failure.
Try anyway.
To live is to risk dying.
Live anyway.
