if lfns are causing you problems mount it as type dos instead of vfat.
(and then linux won't read or write lfns)

dosemu will run on mounted drives by using lredir (doesn't work with
freedos) it's actually capable of bootsing ms-dos off a linux partition
(or off a mounted dos hard disk) even though it can't see the boot sector.
(this feature may be experimental, I've not seen it in the documentation,
I just put /mnt/dos in there instead of /dev/hda1 and it worked!)
