Because NNTP is a client/server situation. You have a live connection
to the NNTP host, which has all the messages on it, and your NNTP
client requests articles as you read. Compressing them just wastes CPU
cycles at each end. 

It'd make about as much sense as a BBS interface where the bbs
compressed the message to send it to your terminal program which then
uncompressed it, all while you were reading mail online.
