ELMORE JAMES
http://home.online.no/~smpeders/ind-elmo.htm
Elmore was the archetype electric slide six string devil BLooZ
botherer.
He invented the lick that all BLooZ bores play.
Think "Dust My Broom", all the Jeremy Spencer tracks with Peter Green's
Fleetwood Mac, George Thoroughgood.
Also he sang high and soulful...
George Harrison is ironically saying that John Lennon's average bit of
lap steel noodling on the track compares badly to what Mr.James would
do (with an understanding that Elmore may have been an innovator but
actually was hardly a virtuoso!).
Also, when the Beatles were recording that particular album, there was
a great interest in the BLooZ. Bands like Cream and the Yardbirds/ Led
Zep had recorded lots of BLooZ stuff and there was also John Mayall,
Chicken Shack, Ten Years After perusing and persuing it. This lead to
a popular interest in the originators of the genre. I was only 14 but
knew about and had albums by Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, B.B.King et
cetera. So when George mentioned Elmore James a large amount of people
knew who he was refering to. Of course Mr.James has slipped a little
more into obscurity as the decdes unfold...
