Yoo Hoo, Jammet!
DM> What's the "Song of the South"? Is it from a movie? All I know is

DM> CD for a reason unknown to me.
"Song of the South" is a Disney Feature that includes live action,
animation, and composite scenes. It (re)tells the story of Uncle Remus
and *his* stories about Brer Rabbit, Brer Fox, Brer Bear, and all their
friends. Probably the most famous part of the film is the song,
"Zip-A-Dee-Do-Dah". It also provided the storyline for Splash Mountain.
Disney has been reluctant to re-release this film in the United States
for reasons of "political correctness" or lack thereof. Remus was a
slave, and seemed happy with his life. Disney, apparently, is concerned
that this would suggest that the company endorsed that Most Peculiar
Institution (slavery), and bring down boycotts and public outcry. Most
of the Disniphiles I know think this is silly, but that's how American
business works in the last quarter of the twentieth century.
The most recent rumor is that Disney plans to have James Earl Jones
record an introduction to the film that will place it in the proper
historical context, and it is hoped, defuse any bad publicity that might
otherwise attach. Strong rumor is that it will be released on video
(NTSC) in the U.S. Weak, but encouraging rumor is that it will first be
released theatrically.
I, for one, can't wait! Disney fans in Europe may have to not wait a
little longer, but not very much.
