Thanks for that info! It is the first positive thing I have heard of
treatment of US prisioners held by Japan. Another factor is that the Japanese
treated their own soldiers (subordinates) very poorly by western standards
and the POW quarters were not much worse than standard Japanese Army
barracks. They did work prisioners very had in mining and work of that
nature. The Russians kept Japanese from the Kuantung Army captured in
Manchuria as priisoners in Siberian lumber camps nad mines for 7 years. On my
last trip to Tokyo, I chatted one night in a neighborhood bar with one such
fellow nad he had a grim story.
