TA>I beleive that the quality is a problem of the SID chip as opposed to TA>the sampler... I proted across some Amiga samples and even though they TA>were good quality on the Am*ga they still sounded relatively poor on TA>the 64... Yes & no. Samples ported from other machines (ibms are the best) sound better than samples made with a 64 sampler. I think it has to do with the 64's power supply for one thing (noisy). TA>I have heard some rumour about using the pulse waveform output to run TA>12 bit samples, and I think there's an example of this in Wonderland TA>10/Censor Design, take a look. I've done this, sure you can play 12 bit samples if you like, but there is a terrible 4khz tone behind it all, and the quality improvement is negligable. Although one advantage of this is that you could have 3 different samples playing simultaneously on each SID channel, but I'd hate to program it.. The way the pulse waveform technique works is that you put on a square wave of the highest frequency you can, and change the pulse width (ie change the ratio of on to off of the square wave). This gives the 'illusion' of a change in volume. This is the way messy-dos machines play samples on their built-in speaker, as it is binary (ie either on or off).
