The bad news...
Nora had a stroke which resulted in paralysis of her left arm
& leg. While this sort of thing is relatively rare in children &
adolescents, it's not as rare as the majority of people tend to think it
is. There have been several cases at BCCH in the past few weeks... or so
we've been told. I met a relative of one of them recently when I took a
break downstairs. I saw this same person heading for the emergency ward
later on, but haven't seen either of them since.
The good news...
There are certain factors which may (or may not) have
contributed to the problem, but there's no obvious cause. In the
upside-down logic which I've learned to accept as par for the course in
hospital, that's good! When there's an obvious reason it's generally not
something anyone can do much about. We've seen some signs of progress.
And now that the folks at BCCH have finished with all their poking &
prodding, Nora is scheduled to go to rehab tomorrow.... :-)
