Hello All!
I feel I must remind everyone about having emergency numbers handy. Last
night was without a doubt one of the worse of my life. I have two Tiels and
one is prone to nightfrights, when we go out and will be returning after dark
a light is always left on for them.Yesterday we went out and not thinking we
would be very late no light was left on.
We returned home just before Midnight. As we walked in the door I knew
something was wrong, there was no chirps of welcome. As I walked over to the
Tiels I couldn't believe the amount of feathers on the floor and when I
looked at my babies the spattered blood all over the cage and two of them
begun to register. They had been in the middle of a thrash when we came home
whats worse we realize it was our cars headlights that sent them off.
The male-Syd was spattered with blood and had lost quite a few flight
feathers, his wing was also hanging.I examined him ,the wing was not broken
nor dislocated and I realized the blood was not his. I turned to Cosmo and
started to have a good look at her.She had literallly torn out all but one
flight feather, she had lost one blood feather and the root was attached. Her
foot was cut,her cere had a piece torn out of it and there was a cut under
her eye.Even though the root came with the blood feather she was
stillbleeding from both wings and I couldn't find out why.
I have been lucky and never had to take any of my kids to a vet. We've had
other emergencys,( I do keep a first aid kit handy) I know how to deal with
most but this was too much. But I did have the number of an all night vet
just in case, but do you think in my panic I had a clue of where it was or
even how to get there NO. Searching through a phone book at a time like this
is stupid.
Luckily my husband was able to keep his wits about him. Found an all night
vet not far from home and quite easy to get to.The vet stopped most of the
bleeding, what had happened is when Cosmo pulled out the feathers she
actually took little pieces of muscle with them it was the open wounds that
were still bleeding.
Cosmo is home, she is certainly not her self and we have to keep a close eye
on her but the important thing is she is alive.
PLEASE FOLLOW A FEW VERY IMPORTANT RULES.IF YOUR BIRD IS A THRASHER LEAVE A
LIGHT ON. HAVE A FIRST AID KIT HANDY ,ALWAYS HAVE THE PHONE NUMBER AND
ADDRESS OF AN AVIAN VET HANDY AND KNOW HOW TO GET THERE BEFORE YOU EVER HAVE
TO.INVEST IN A SMALL CARRYING CAGE AND ALSO HAVE IT HANDY AND ALWAYS READY TO
GO.
REMEMBER MINUTES COUNT.IF A BIRD LOSES ONE PERCENT OF ITS BODY WEIGHT IN LOSS
OF BLOOD IT WILL MOST LIKELY DIE.
Give your babies an extra cuddle tonight and be thankful that they are
there to annoy and frustrate you another day.
Deb....
