Thats the classic stuff I get occasionally too. I normally abort
the first call with an ESC, but it will timeout eventually. I just
abort it if I am at the keyboard to minimise the online charge.

Its basically your modem fucking up the EC negotiation.
Our modems know they are still trying to negotiate the
EC when yours has decided that its over and done with.

PE> What I don't understand is why I never seem to have a mail session
PE> with someone when they fail to get an error correcting session.

Thats because YOUR modem thinks its got a non EC connect, OUR modems
still think they are negotiating the EC stuff, and eventually give up
and hang up the line. Your modem gets its brain scrambled and you dont
actually have a proper non EC connect at all, your modem just thinks you
have got one when you havent. Our modems know better, so it dont work.

PE> I mean, the lines aren't that bad that we all have
PE> to give up the moment we see "CONNECT 14400" are they?

Thats right, we can for example FORCE and non EC connect, THEN
that problem about your modem getting its brain scrambled doesnt
arise, the modems at each end of the session agree on what they
have got, just like they do with a proper successful EC connect too.
