 >> Makes me wonder why people would spend $1795 CDN on a
 >> multi-mode radio that only gets used on 2m FM,HF and NEVER ON 6m!!
JE> A Fool and his money are soon parting.
 Not really.
Many of the users of the 706 are using it on HF in their car and sometimes
2m at home. I have got a couple of them onto 6m FM and they are now looking
for plans or antennas for 6 ssb after they heard me working a few stations
this past weekend on ssb.
JE> see the guy I bought the 2m rig from. Looked up, and there was 11
JE> elements, on a pole with a rotator on it. He said "That's yours too,
JE> whenever you wanna get it." So I asked how much, and he shocked me with
JE> "No, it comes with the Radio!" I can deal with that! ;-)
 GRAB IT!
I used to have a pair of 13B2's phased together at 40' and they kicked butt
without having to use the amplifier. With the amp on I used to get stations
in the back of their beam turning around and coming back to me from as far
south as the New York/New Jersey boarder.
I should have kept the pair but I sold one off when I added other beams to
the rack on the tower.
JE> (note, when I said Tone Pad, I was talking about sub-audible tones
(better
 JE> known as PL tones))
Won't work for that idea as the jack was designed for the optional number
pad to generate DTMF tones for patches and repeater control codes.
Of course you could use a small CTCSS generator board inside a hand mic to
get your PL tones. There are some kits I see advertized in CQ-VHF and CQ.
JE> I'm thinking if I can generate sub-audible tones and feed them in from
the
JE> rear of the rig, at that T-pad point, then a DTMF mic would be handy for
 JE> some repeaters functions.
You would need to unwire the jack for the DTMF function, then re-wire it to
feed your CTCSS tones into the radio.
But with the tight reciever on the radio you wouldn't really need the tones
for recieving.
 >> JE> Ultimatly, what I'd like the Mirage 1016B. 10w in, 160 out,

JE> Nah - mobil operation is MUCHLY attractive when you can transmit a -lot-
JE> farther than you should. Makes the playing feild more level. You can
I wouldn't mind going mobile on 2 and 6 ssb but there my be a minor problem
with mounting antnennas on my truck. For 2m I can use a magmount while 6 I
can come up with a loaded-coil whip.
The problem I'll run into is my signal may only be directional off the rear
on 6m while the 2m will be an omni pattern.
Fun to have someone wait while you turn the car around to talk to them on
.
 >> At 185w out this amp sucks back a healthy 35-40 amps at 13.8 DC to keep
t
JE> Sounds like it should work as advertised! Phase in another 13-element
beam
JE> and be twice as loud!
 Did it once already.
The other 13B2 now enjoys a new home 150Kms away as of last spring.
 I have a 13b2 on 2m ssb,3 elements on 6m ssb and an 11 element for 440 ssb
that is tuned right now for FM until I get a new 440 all-mode.
 >> I did try it mobile once but the car kept stalling
JE> Ya gotta be rolling down the highway, Rob, before you can key that puppy
 JE> up! (chuckle)
You got that right! At idle I could barely key the amp over with the radio
before the headlights dimmed and the car stalled out.
At that was with an 80 amp alternator..
JE> J.D. /K1ZAT used to have a 1968 Volkswagon Sqareback. It was the first

My 732A can screw up the cruise control when I transmit at 45w out and the
tach drops 1500 rpm when I key 10w.
My friend's Yaesu FT-5100 at 50w totally stalled out one of the new, computer
loaded/controlled cop cars when he went by with his high-gain dual band
Diamond on the roof and 50w.
Freaky to watch but lots of explaining to do when they pulled us over after
they got their car started again!
Rf fields do wild things to computer systems in cars.
