I have one word for you:  horseshit.
Here's why.  The heads on a hard drive "fly" over the surface of the disk, 
because they are aerodynamically designed that way.  They "fly" in the 
airflow created by the spinning disk.  Cut the power, and the disk slows down 
- it doesn't stop abruptly.  And guess what?  the heads will be retracted 
before they can "crash" into the disk surface.
You doubt?  Tell me: as far as the hard drive is concerned, what's the 
difference between a power failure and the user switching the machine OFF?
