of
CM>modifying the SKS to a high capacity mag?...I didn't know this law
existed...
The "legality" of an imported firearm is based on a point system.
Thank George Bush and his 1990 import ban for that. That's why
pistol-grip stocks were banned and the MAK-90 has a thumbhole
stock.
The law/ruling/whatever says that you cannot modify a rifle to a
configuration that would have made it illegal to import.
I don't know the exact details of what is legal or illegal to do
to an SKS. I've heard it depends on if your SKS barrel is
threaded for a flash-suppressor, and if it has a bayonet lug.
If it has one or the other, then I think changing the magazine
from fixed to removeable is a no-no. If it has neither threaded
barrel, nor a bayonet lug (doesn't matter if it has a bayonet or
not, just the "lug" counts!) then it might be ok to switch to a
greater-than 10round fixed mag or a removeable magazine. It
might even depend on whether your SKS was imported prior to or
after the 1990 ban. I'm not sure of this, so contact your local
gunsmith or gundealer or BATF office to find out for sure.
It's so complicated, it might be safer to just leave your SKS in
the configuation that you bought it.
