It's funny, and I'm not sure why, but I would have guessed the reverse.  I 
think I associate the name "beau" (bo) as a very southern thing (and SC is 
farther south than NC).  Or that maybe they felt 'fancier' there and would 
have hung onto the more continental pronunciation.

But technically they're both southern states, so I guess it could have gone 
either way.
