George Harrison was recording a B-Side for one of his Cloud Nine
singles. Jeff Lynne was the Producer. Lynne was also producing
Roy Orbison's latest album and while the three of them had lunch,
Orbison volunteered to sing on George's song. The only recording
studio they could find that was available was Bob Dylan's. The
guitar George wanted to use was at his friend Tom Petty's house.
When they went to pick it up, Petty tagged along.
That's how the band was formed. You'll notice they didn't recruit
anyone. You'll also note that neither Carl Perkins nor Chet
Atkins names are mentioned.
