Jeff, at 16:41 on Jun 13 1995, you wrote to Bill Grimsley... BG> Needless to say, that extra $120m per annum has not been seen since, BG> or at least not by the minister for education. Just like your 3x3 BG> tax (which is actually something like a 7x9 tax now), it'll never be BG> lifted or reduced. JG> The tax is still only 4x4 Que? I think you'll find that the original 3x3 fuel tax was introduced near on 8-10 years ago now, and is a hell of a lot more than just 4c, isn't it? JG> but the legislation has been amended (they just renewed it), to allow the JG> money to be spent on things other than roads. This action took one JG> government longer than I thought it would. I expect the tax to be fully JG> absorbed into general revenue within two governments. I fill up at Wallangarra, on the Qld/NSW border, where petrol is 60.9c/l. If I forget, and have to stop at Tenterfield, just 14km down the road, it costs me a massive 73.9c/l, and stays that way until I get to Cessnock, where it drops back to 69.9c/l (why all the .9s BTW?). Average price difference between NSW and Qld is (given similar conditions) approximately 8 cents per litre.
