Essentially it became a 1040 STFM, yes.

    They were different machines and I liked them both in
different ways. The Amiga's custom chipset, bus architecture and
multitasking operating system were impressive but that also made it more
complicated and more expensive.  I really liked the simplicity of the ST
and I liked that the operating system was in ROM and I was comfortable with
GEM because I'd used it on a couple of other computers.
