subject: PnP Monitor?

Hi Matt Mc_Carthy, hope you are having a nice day

PW>> I've the laptop set to keep 8 copies by setting
PW>>MaxBackupCopies=8 in the /windows/scanreg.ini
MM>More important than how many is which ones! I always make a manual backup
MM>(simply copy them to a "MYBAK" directory) of User.dat and System.dat
MM>before I "mess with certain stuff".

That was one reason I upped the number, sometimes you forget to
do backups.

MM>I also like to try to remember to make copies about monthly, as they are
MM>often lifesavers for the times when 'something goes wrong'.

Like here when the laptop for some reason decides that it no longer
supports going into hibernate mode when I close the lid and instead
goes into standby mode which does drain the battery down.

MM>The five copies Windows automatically makes (eight in your case) get used
MM>up pretty fast when something goes wrong, as Windows overwrites them with
MM>corrupt data on a 'bad boot attempt'.

And that's what bit me on the {at}$$ when real audio fscked up my
inet/comm settings after the install puked and crashed the system.

I didn't know abt the backup copies of the registry and by the time
I found out... :'<

I never have found all the things that got trashed and abt the only
fix left is to totally wipe the drive and reinstall everything.
(which i'd do but i don't have the installs for everything, like
office 2000 premium, eudora 4 pro or netscape 4.08, et al)

MM>Win 95/98 have that masochistic ability to self destruct by destroying the
MM>registry backups each time you re-boot to identify a 'problem'. By the
MM>time you've found the problem, you no longer have any valid registry
MM>copies to allow a 'successful' re-boot.

And that's what got me leaving me from having a system that would
make regular 53k connects and let me xfer a dozen files simultaneously
w/ each running 6-7kbyte/sec, down to one that barely makes 40k
connects and can't even xfer one file over 750bytes/sec. :<

-=> Yours sincerely, Paul Williams <=-

... 'Eliminate' can be taken in many different ways... BTW, so can Anna.
