Yep, Been there, done that, kicked the printer, burnt the driver
disks, etc.
 
The Win95 spooler is a real PITA.  Ever seen what happens when you
exceed 254 print jobs in the print que? Try it some time.
 
The big problem with not being able to spool DOS print jobs is when
used on a network, local print jobs can interfere with remote jobs.
 
In my efforts to work around the problem (when creating huge PCL5
reports, account statements, etc) I found the problem is totally
repeatable with a given print file.  Usually it manifests itself in
the print que as a second print job of a few bytes in length,
immediately after the print job that you wanted to produce.
 
 Thats where the missing ESC is being replaced with a page-eject
sequence (i assume), when I see the results on a HP4L.  My friend has
a HP5P that does similar but not quite identical things.
