Dear Vern:
VF> Jackets. I'm thinking of getting some rain-gear, but don't have a
VF> clue what to go and spend my money on.
Look around and see what you like. Some are better than others. Example?
REI's new catalogue shows a cycling jacket that is bright yellow with
black logos on the front with yellow sleeves but is black for 3/4 of the
back. Stupid design, IMHO. If you wear that at night or in poor
visibility, you're asking to get hit from behind by a driver that can't
see you well.
I'm fond of Mountain Equipment Co-op, based in Canada. Some of their
jackets have a feature that I don't see on a lot of other ones: really
good cuffs. I have one that has armpit zippers (great) and the cuffs are
stiff with a velcro strap that can seal them or open them for ventilation.
They also have a loop that fits over your thumb so that when the cuffs are
opened up, they act like air scoops and don't just ride up your wrist and
seal that way. IMHO, that's a big improvement over standard elastics. My
jacket is bright yellow with a reflective stripe around the chest and back
and down the arms.
The one I have is windproof and maybe rainproof but I don't ride in the
rain. They have some other ones that are more expensive with better
features like more reflective tape and that sort of thing.
Hope this helps,
Steve
