the easiest way is to add this mecca script somewhere in the logon process:
[key_poke]1
[menu_cmd msg_area]
[key_poke]cnr
[comment  ^^^ cnr = current/new/read]
[menu_cmd msg_browse]
That will change to area 1, then read all new messages in that area. 
That's what i use on my system, it works great. In msgarea.ctl area 1 is 
flagged only with the Pvt style, but sysops can still enter public messages, 
so if you address a public message to all, it'll get read using the browse 
command above. I use it instead of bulletins now, a) much easier for me to 
make, b) users are forced to read them, c) they can go back and read old ones 
if they want, again without any work on my part =)
