I've been advocating a new system for rating relievers and this year's Stats
has a system that is *similar* to what I've been talking about. The system
uses *runs prevented* to rate the relievers and while it's a start, it still
falls a little short. I think that it should be augmented by holds, saves and
blown saves - much like what I had advocated. For those who are interested,
here is the chart that the author, Steve Schulman, used (I made a correction
to None on and 2 outs. The chart read 1.0 so I changed it to .1. When you see
the chart, you'll understand why):
Number Of Outs
Runners 0 1 2
None .45 .25 .10
1st .78 .48 .21
2nd 1.07 .70 .35
3rd 1.28 .90 .38
1st&2nd 1.38 .89 .46
1st&3rd 1.64 1.09 .49
2nd&3rd 1.95 1.37 .66
Full 2.25 1.55 .80
You'll have to get Stats Scoreboard for a full explanation.:-)
